It is a myth that left handed people are smarter, but you lefties do have an advantage in art and math though. Just google ''is left handed people smarter'' and then click on the link by Scientific American.

Do I count as ambidextrous or still a lefty? I can write with my left and play sports with my right hand (throw, catch and punch)

Not necessarily. A lot of people are like yourself. They write with their left and do other things with their right (especially when using scissors which I find a little odd). I do believe that you could train yourself to become ambidextrous, however the definition does imply on having equal strength in both hands.

I'm left handed but can write with both hands (shattered my left hand when I was 8, made a full recovery but had to use my right hand for 3 months). I smudge way more when I'm writing with my right hand (hardly ever smudge with the left), and I use gel pens almost exclusively. I cannot help but wonder if fellow lefties who smudge are holding the pen incorrectly.

Well, it does definitely depend on the way that you write, for example if you hold your pen above the mass of your hand then less smudging will occur. From what I see, most lefties tend to write with pens right before their hand so it’s a common annoyance to find smeared ink all over the bottom of their hand.
